Smeetha Bhoumik's Kaleidoscope

Connecting With Art

Art, to me, is the intersection of real and imagined worlds-
weaving dreams, breathing freedom
into time and space
with emotions etched out in colour .....

In one sense, my oils are 'e-scapes' into a
fantasy land where anything may happen;
in yet another they
inevitably bring me closer to life around me : an acute
feeling of isolation or oneness with events, emotions, experiences,
feelings, follies, fables, flora, fauna.......
the act of applying brush over canvas quite
inevitable,
almost a colourful certainty.

Perceptions, emotions, events and individuals
inhabit my paintings in exciting ways;
breaking down barriers, creating new relationships....
there’s ‘we’ and there’s ‘they’....
beautifully correlated

My Art

Spanning a kaleidoscopic exposure to expression in its myriad forms,

be it creative management workshops or computer speak, with an M.Tech

in Human Resources from I.I.T. Kharagpur, I arrived home to art since 1998,

in a thrilling culmination of childhood passion, adult intent and deep appreciation

of life & the arts.

Exhibiting internationally in juried events in Italian & US galleries on-line, with six solo exhibitions in Mumbai,

group shows with Concern India, Artists’ Centre & Indian Fine Arts, my work has received two

Special Recognition Awards from Period Gallery, USA.

What Others Say

Smeetha’s canvasses are dynamic, richly textured story-scapes mirroring

her exciting background – she holds an M.Tech from IIT Kharagpur and has

worked in engineering

and software companies, while relentlessly training herself in the arts. Be it the

treasure trove of books, the Aladdin’s cave of internet based learning opportunities,

museum visits across the globe, she has hungrily devoured all she needed to express

her unique Indian

idiom in a universal setting. An intuitive artist who has painted forever, Smeetha says

‘finally coming home to art is a wonderful spiritual culmination; capturing life’s emotions,

experiences and events in a riot of colour ……’

Painting professionally for over a decade now, her canvasses are amazing, enchanting, inspiring

a childlike wonder on the beholder. Smeetha's range of styles and techniques makes one realise

she never stops evolving, experimenting, enjoying immensely the process of enlivening canvasses,

recreating emotions, giving one back moments forgotten.

Symbolisms form an important element of her work and the viewer may find more than one embedded

enchantingly in hitherto undiscovered connections, the feeling of elation then complete.

Growth Phase and Emerging Styles

Over time two techniques have evolved creating a distinct

style element in my work. I call them the ‘dots’ and ‘roses’.

I’m thankful to God for letting me see beauty in simplicity.

The use of dots as lighting elements I’ve done quite instinctively

and received appreciation from senior artists and art lovers alike.

But my favourite is the rose motif, which is now an effortless

element in many of my paintings ranging from abstracts to

representationals.

Art is a journey

With paint as a probe, my art explores the universal

connections of our shared existence; letting hues and

shades define perspectives, illumine thoughts and

uncover images…..

of untold beauty, or infinite sadness. And hope.

From the dazzling lights and doom-filled darkness of the

morphing, multi-coloured metro Mumbai and India,

where I stay, to the scintillating galaxies, supernovae and

star-birth nebulae of our amazing universe – the images

just seem to evolve on canvas, while I let them arrive

unfettered and quite spontaneous.

Art, to me, is an integration of all that has come earlier –

a force that unifies my passion, knowledge, skills and experience.

An M.Tech from IIT Kharagpur, past corporate experience,

national and international juried exhibitions, awards, continuous

learning in the arts thanks to travel and technology, propel my art forward.

Fantasy and reality intermingle creating magic-points, and the act

of applying brush over canvas is quite inevitable, almost a

colourful certainty!

Thank you for your interest

Biography

My roots, like tiny rivulets, lie in the picturesque foothills of the Himalayas - Dehradoon in India. Born in the valley with much of my childhood embedded there, I can magically conjure up those early images anywhere with a haunting old melody, a lilting li’l tune. It's beauty just stole into my being, enchanting like the Rispana flowing past my grandmother’s. Having travelled all over India and Europe, I now live and work out of Mumbai, the bustling Indian metro.

I've come home to art after a plethora of exciting experiences..... I earned my M.Tech.degree from IIT Kharagpur (India's premiere hi-tech Univ.) and worked for engineering and software companies in culturally diverse Indian metros.....before stepping out headlong into the kaleidoscopic adventure called 'art'.

Fulfilling a life-long passion and habit, I donned professional colours as a full-time artist in 1998 with solo exhibitions in Mumbai, group shows abroad and international juried exhibitions on-line. And thanks to the global revolution called ‘internet’, it is very gratifying to be granted world-wide viewer-ship and appreciation .

My canvases share in full measure the colourful tapestry of experiences, emotions, travels, relationships and laughter that we create......or erase.

To say that the cities I paint are not really there, or that my settings are surreal, would mean eulogising my love for magic, for that little extra.... without which life is a tedium.

My spaces, my cities could be anywhere, everywhere, I may have been to one, you could be going through something really extraordinary right now.....
Come, see for yourself,

Hope you enjoy the paintings

Welcome
